The announcement came suddenly on the morning of Friday, Feb. 24. District Attorney Kevin R. Steele said that two county residents had experience overdoses after consuming the affected products. Both individuals have since recovered, he added.
The tainted products include "Strictly Delta" brand "Delta 8 THC 600mg Happy Cubes," as well as “Urb Extrax” and “Packwoods Coned" gummies.
After the two non-fatal overdoses were reported to police, officers went undercover into a Tobacco Hut smoke shop and bought "Happy Cubes" in a variety of flavors, officials said. When tested, the juicy pineapple flavor was found to contain fentanyl and the blueberry lemonade flavor had heroin, fentanyl, and methyl fentanyl, detectives said.
On the night of Thursday, Feb. 24, police executed search warrants on every Tobacco Hut location in the county, DA Steele said. All packages of "Happy Cubes" have been seized, and as of Friday morning, more are continuing to test positive for illegal drugs, he added.
“Individuals should not consume any flavors of these Strictly Delta brand of CBD gummies," DA Steele said. "If anyone has any of these gummies, do not eat them! We need to get the word out that some of these packages contain deadly drugs—fentanyl and heroin."
“We don’t yet know whether other items from the stores contain deadly drugs," he continued. "Testing is ongoing. We also don’t know if this is a widespread issue but we are working with law enforcement at the local, state, and federal levels to ascertain that.”
Anyone who bought Strictly Delta brand "Happy Cubes" in Montgomery County and still has them is urged not to eat them. Call the county Detective Bureau at 610-278-3368 or dial your local police station to have the candies tested, officials said.
Update: On Friday afternoon, DA Steele announced that more products seized have tested positive for illegal drugs.
Investigators continue to test the confiscated products, he added.
